San Bernardino is home to several institutions of higher education. Prospective college students may choose from public and private universities, community colleges and vocational training programs. Public options include California State University at San Bernardino and San Bernardino Valley College. The well-regarded University of Redlands, a private institution, is about 10 miles east of San Bernardino. Vocational programs are offered locally by Bryman College and ITT Technical Institute.
For recreation, San Bernardino’s residents and visitors have many options. Artistic, educational and historic sites and venues suit indoor interests, while outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the many natural sites nearby to explore. Additionally, San Bernardino has the shopping malls, concert halls, parks, athletic facilities and recreational sports leagues you’d expect from a city of its size. Several groups and venues support the local arts community. The Arts Council of San Bernardino coordinates funding and arranges exhibits and programs. One example of its efforts is the Arts of 5th complex in downtown. Several groups worked together to establish the complex, which offers a place for under-represented artists to display their work and sharpen their talent. More traditional exhibits are on display at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum on the California State University campus. San Bernardino also has two symphonies, one English, one Spanish, a light opera association and several community theaters. Within greater San Bernardino County, you will also find many outdoor venues for hiking, fishing, biking, boating and swimming. San Bernardino’s own Glen Helen Regional Park has two lakes, open for year-round catfish and trout fishing. Other sites to explore are the San Bernardino National Forest, Lake Gregory Regional Park and Lake Arrowhead. For the winter months, the ski resorts in Big Bear are within 40 miles by car. San Bernardino's climate is sunny and dry; the city averages 70% sunshine. The inland location not far from California deserts makes for mild winters and very warm summers. Temperatures usually top out in the mid-90s in July and August, while winter temperatures dip to the 40s in December and January. Average annual rainfall is a mere 18 inches, primarily falling between November and February. |
